Puccini’s Nessun Dorma holds a special place in the hearts of Brits; it was the theme tune for the Beeb’s coverage of the 1990 World Cup and will forever be bound up with tearful penalty shoot-outs and whoooo-almosts. The aria has also been world famous fat guy Luciano Pavarotti’s theme song as he’s waddled across the world’s stages these past 30-odd years. Now it’s the turn of cell-phone salesman Paul Potts, winner of ITV’s Britain’s Got Talent. He’s also picked up a $2 million recording contract as a result of this performance. You’ve heard it a zillion times before, but, just like at the opera, we all love a happy ending.
