The Intelligence of Artifice

If the Spice Girls sold girl power by pandering to male carnality, then FemTV's Catherine Purdue takes that formula to its logical conclusion. The Canadian performance artist's alter ego, Miz Kitty Singing Teenage Dominatrix, is modern science's attempt to build a coquettish pop kitten in the throwaway spirit of Aqua and the frilly-drawered Apollonia. She struts mechanically as if programmed by hours of Britney Spears videos, occasionally slapping proffered dancer booty in a tame display of Maxim naughtiness. Her eyes are feline slits of nowhere, her open-mouthed come-hither a tunnel to doom. Her mantra, "You can have my body, but you can't have my soul" is about the only meaningful passage in this vacuous confection of gloops, bleeps, and electro-whips. Bubblegum colors bleed like syrup sores from every synthetic pore. A retro toy robot overheats with desire. Rarely will man be so titillated in both attic and basement.
