Technical Support

Comedy Central isn’t known for subtlety. But comedian Nick Thune’s new video iThunes: Aim caught me off guard. Far from crass, Thune’s performance turns a sleazy teenage chat-room experience into a coming-of-age story. Comedy Central’s promo page tags Thune’s video as “poignant” and I’m inclined to agree. Even if the premise—computer nerds gathered in a church for “technical support” group meetings—closes in on slapstick, Thune’s sentimentalizing of smiley faces, aim abbreviations, and screen names actually strikes a chord with a generation of twenty-somethings who have now spent over a decade emailing and instant-messaging. However, without a doubt, Thune’s sentimentalizing only makes his mockery of instant-message culture all the more biting.
